My Leadership Profile

Introduction
By evaluating the different attributes, behaviors, and virtues when combined make an effective leader; I am able to reflect internally to reveal the presence or absence of such traits within myself. In doing so, I am enlightened to my strengths and weaknesses and can move forward to enhance and develop necessary talents to grow into the skillful and effective leader I am capable of becoming. For myself, this continues a journey that began many years ago but thru the readings and reflections of this course, the qualities that were forever elusive are now obtainable.

My Leadership Profile
Having a spectrum of management and leadership characteristics are of utmost importance during the healthcare system transformation, which is currently taking place. Management is about coping with complexity while leadership is about coping with change (Kotter, 2001). Working in healthcare management and being a healthcare executive, Chief Medical Officer, for a medical management organization during the time of HealthCare Reform has been exciting – there are many opportunities and challenges during this rapid changing landscape. As a physician, I have had many occasions to manage primarily a clinical team, usually consisting of physicians and nurses. But as CMO, I am required to be more than clinically competent but also have strong communication skill, adaptability, judgment but more importantly to inspire and motivate the team (both clinical and non-clinical individuals). “Leaders get into everyone’s skin, exuding positive energy and optimism”, this is Jack’s 3rd Rule and what I believe to be my strongest leadership principle (Welch, 2005).

My DiSC profile of “i” reinforces what I assumed, my style as a manager is my ability to generate excitement, I am high energy and I desire to bring people together. In addition, priorities that shape my management experience include providing encouragement, valuing.

Leadership Profile Paper

This paper will profile Jeff Hawkins, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for PalmOne, Inc. examining qualities that Mr. Hawkins exhibits that make him influential leader. The paper will also examine details of the business strategy that make this man an exceptional innovator and his contribution to eBusiness technology.

Jeff Hawkins a graduate of Cornell Universityis best known as "the inventor who, in 1994, took blocks of mahogany and plywood into his garage and emerged with a prototype for the PalmPilot" (PC Magazine, 2000). Joining forces with friend Donna Dubinsky, Jeff "pulled off one of the most successful new-product launches in consumer electronics history, selling 400,000 units when they debuted in 1996. Now Palm Computing owns 80% of the handheld market" (PC Magazine, 2000).

Mr. Hawkins vision combined with his personal commitment and desire to constantly improve processes, efficiency, and develop new technologies has proved Jeff to be a leader in innovation. According to Mr Hawkins, "The future of computing is mobile," The PDA is going to be the way people access Internet data and integrate that data with everything else they need to keep track of. This will be most people's PC and Web terminal" (PC Magazine, 2000).

Jeff has nearly 20 years of technical expertise and is often credited as the designer who "reinvented the handheld market." According to Jeff, "We didn't get enamored with the technology, we just kept simple goals low price, small enough to fit into a shirt pocket, faster to use than paper, and an effortless sync to the PC " ( PC Magazine, 2000). He co-founded Handspring in 1998, and created the Visor, "whose thrift and expandability forced other makers to be more competitive. Visor, is among the fastest-selling computer hardware products ever" (Willis, 2001).

When examining Jeff Hawkins business model during his time as CEO with handspring there was no definitive answer. Hawkins Business model seemed more like a question. "How do you make an exciting product that's pushing the envelope in some ways, but on the other hand is usable and accessible to a very broad populace?"(Barnett, 2000). Hawkins had a business model that relied on strategic partners to perform business tasks such as manufacturing and distribution.

Hawkins strategy is to generate ideas to promote increased efficiency and cost reduction while striving to predict future consumer needs. For example, the Visor "can morph into just about any handheld device you can imagine, from a pager to an MP3 player to a global-positioning satellite receiver, simply by replacing a small module on its back" (Time, Inc. 2005).

Successful leaders continuously show connections between vision and strategies.

Mr. Hawkins exhibits many leadership qualities that inspire confidence and belief in the future.

Jeff is able to articulate a vision depicting where he wants his organization or team to be. During earlier business project failures Jeff remained calm and projected optimism by turning the project liabilities into assets. For example Jeff and his "colleagues pounded the pavements in the mid-1990s in search of venture capital funding" and today Jeff currently holds nine patents for various handheld devices and features. It is obvious from the research that Mr. Hawkins exhibits an attitude that embraces change. (Meyers, 2000)

Leadership and Profile Plan

Every leader whom has ever had control over anything has had some inherent strengths or weaknesses that drove their styles and actions. It is not until that leader takes to the time to understand their strengths and weaknesses can they really become effective. It is the contention of many that once they reach the role of leader, they will finally be able to make all the necessary changes to an organization or a process that is really going to move the needle and take the organization to the next step.

What happens when once you reach a leadership position, but you can't get people to follow you? Is it because you are not skilled in the position that you hold? Probably not, or the assumption is you really should have never gotten the position in the first place. Is it because all the people that work under you are bad employee's and can't do their jobs? Again, probably not or the person that put them in the position didn't know what they were doing, and they were able to hold on to the position once they got it by pure luck, or incompetence. The answer that we are looking for is probably something from within that we need to work on. It is possibly a lack of understanding about our skills and our weaknesses and what we need to do as individuals maximize our strengths and mitigate our weaknesses.

We are going to take the time to look at some very in-depth theories, and some powerful tools that are going to make us analyze ourselves as leaders, maximize our strengths, and identify our weaknesses. No leader takes a position and is 100% effective at everything they do; some of the greatest leaders over time had flaws to their approach and to their style, but were able to offset that enough to be successful. I as a person whom is looking to grow in my leadership responsibilities want to become successful at doing this as well, but before that can happen I need to understand these philosophical theories and learn how to execute them in my own professional life.

Behavioral and Contingency Theories

In order to give an accurate description of both behavioral and contingency theory examples, we first need to understand what they are and how they help shape us as a leader. First the contingency theory is defined as "a behavioral theory that claims there is no best way to organize a corporation and the organizational structure of a company, however contingent upon the internal and external condition of the company" (Business Mate, 2011). In other words there is no handbook hand book for a CEO that walks into a new organization, he needs to be able to adjust his management style to the organization.

A good example of this would be Dan Ackerson whom is the CEO of General Motors, he had to come in and center his ideals and style around where the organization is now and not necessarily where it was in the past. Could you imagine the residuals if Akerson

In the words of Joel Osteen he stated that "as a business owner, you can help set the direction of your employees. With our words, we have the ability to help, mold and shape the future of anyone over whom we have influence". Words are indeed powerful it can make or break a person base on the words that are spoken to them. Pastor Joel Osteen, a very influential figure and the current senior Pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas is known for speaking the language and messages of hope. His success as having the largest church in America and now his popularity worldwide proved him to be an effective leader today. I will be assessing in this paper, how Joel Osteen portrays to be one of the most effective leader I know and how his messages and example made an impact in my life.

Joel Osteen was born in Houston, Texas. His father, John Osteen founded Lakewood Church in 1959 but when his father passed, Joel took over the ministry as senior pastor of the church back in 1999. Lakewood Church was the former Compaq Center and is the former home of the Houston Rockets. Today it is occupied weekly with an attendance averaging forty-five thousand people and it's still growing rapidly with more and more people attending. Joel Osteen's ministry is growing so fast that his messages reach over seven million broadcast media viewers and in over 100 nations around the world. I chose Joel Osteen as the leader who I consider to be effective because through his messages that I hear and read it helped me tremendously in dealing with challenges and disappointments in life. I gained a different approach on how to face and react towards a problem and an adversity. His teachings helped to shape my thinking to staying positive through difficulties and he has inspired my spirit to believe in my dreams again. During my darkest moments and depressing times of my life, his message of hope and uplifting words was what got me through. I own CD's of his messages which I listen to in the car and watch his segment on TV. I also receive his daily devotion in my email and I am currently reading his book Your Best Life Now. It helps me to stay focus and to maintain a positive outlook and thinking. He became a coach, a motivator and a messenger of hope from God in my life. I can remember times in my life when I had lost hope in everything; I became very bitter and angry with life. I wanted to end my life but each time I hear the words delivered from Pastor Joel Osteen, it seems to be the perfect message for me from God and I find hope and the light at the end of the tunnel again.

Joel Osteen is a great example of an effective leader because he possesses many qualities and characteristics that include being a good motivator, a mentor, a visionary, a strategist, team leader, a good role model, he is compassionate and he is an effective communicator. He genuinely cares about people and he inspires hope and help people to realize their full potential. He encourages the broken and the hopeless to dream again. He assists in helping to understand your value without fear and doubt. It is through his kind, humble, compassionate, strong and resilient characteristics that affected me most as well as led an example in my life to live by.
