Definition Essay Using a Theme (or an Analogy) to Organize Your Definition

I think I made myself clear in class about the definition essays in our textbook. Each uses an analogy to help readers quickly understand the characteristics of a term.

This is Writing 5. No longer can you name three things about your subjects and call it an essay. The characteristics you name must be surprising, innovative, unusual, or organized in a surprising, innovative, or unusual way.

Readers will not care that your brother is pale, naps all day, and avoids mirrors. On the other hand, if you suspect that he might be a vampire, you have the basis for a good analogy, and you can define your brother's personality by comparison.

The chapter samples are good examples of Definition essays of Students, Football Fans, and TV Viewers, respectively. None takes a simple dictionary-type approach. The essays are vivid, very specific, and memorable, and each depends on an analogy for comparison, emphasis, and organization. Let's get specific.

The Insane Football Fan. Football Fans are defined in terms of their behavior, their attitudes about the past, and their loyalty. Specifically, they wear official team gear, go to games in icy winter, and decorate their homes and vehicles with team logos. Their memories of team achievements (and disasters) keep the past vividly alive. Finally, they pay such close attention to their teams' exploits large and small that their loyalty cannot be doubted.

Those characteristics would be acceptable in themselves if the author were satisfied with a mediocre and forgettable essay. Instead, he introduces the theme of insanity to enliven his writing and provide an organizing principle. He makes the analogy that extreme fans resemble insane people. Suddenly, everything coheres (you've seen the noun version of this word, coherence, on your grading rubrics). The three main characteristics of fans—behavior, memory, and loyalty—are much more effective together because the author points out they are also characteristics of insanity.

Football fans behave insanely (it's insane to sit outdoors in a blizzard to watch someone else play); they're insanely fascinated by the past (a sane person doesn't cringe at the thought of a loss in 1980 as if it happened yesterday); they're insanely loyal (only a crazy person paints his face green to drive to the stadium). The theme of insanity (or the analogy to insane people) connects the otherwise disconnected main ideas and gives the essay its coherence and effectiveness.

The Zombie-likeStudent. Does this essay define Zombies or a certain type of student? Most likely, the assignment was to define a particular type of student (like the choice you've been offered to define a Good Neighbor). The author could have described a type of student who pays no attention, shows no interest, and has no direction. That would be fine for Writing 4, but not memorable enough for Writing 5.

At some point, the author noticed the student's shuffling gait was like a zombie's walk. Following that inspiration, the author expanded the zombie analogy until the entire essay became an exciting and memorable comparison instead of a list of three forgettable characteristics.

Television Addiction. The first sentence indicates that the essay is an extended Definition. It describes how the word "addiction" is used in casual conversation, then carefully begins to draw a very serious comparison between television addiction and other familiar and destructive addictions. In effect, the author "re-defines" television addiction as a serious psychological syndrome. The theme is contained in the one-sentence Paragraph 6: "Let us consider television viewing in light of the conditions that define serious addictions."

Finding your Theme or Analogy. These three examples all use comparison or analogy as their technique. Sports fanatics are insane people. Some students are like zombies. Obsessed TV-watchers are addicts.

The key to writing a vivid and memorable definition essay is finding the theme that connects your main ideas. A good analogy provides a strong theme. Let's try one:

Want to define a Patriot? We can start by listing attributes. A patriot loves his country and defends it against critics. He wears the flag proudly. Even its colors are meaningful to him. He believes its citizens are worthy and admirable and its leaders are wise and just. When it competes with other countries, he wants his country to win. He gets emotional when he hears the national anthem. It's almost as if his country was a team, with a fight song and uniforms and a chance to win the championship. See? His devotion to his country is similar to his devotion to his hometown sports teams. A patriot is like a sports fan!

Your analogy doesn't have to be perfect. Your job is to find the three ways that make the best comparison and organize them into a coherent essay.

ASSIGNMENT. 5 Paragraph Definition Essay

TOPIC. Choose any of the terms from the list on Page 326.

PERSPECTIVE. Challenge yourself to be unique. Don't be satisfied with a straightforward list of characteristics. The dictionary can do that! Express a point of view.

ADVANCE FEEDBACK: Leave me a comment below if you're struggling with an analogy or theme. I'll help. Everyone else will benefit from seeing your question and my answer!

Find Your Focus - Start That Personal Essay

Find Your Focus & Start That Personal Essay

By JennaHatfield on August 04, 2016

Getting started often feels like one of the most difficult parts of writing a personal essay. What do you want to say? How do you want to say it?

We can sit and ask ourselves questions for days, weeks, years before we ever sit down and start writing. I'm guilty of it, and I bet you are, too.

These tips for getting focused, getting started, and then doing something with what you've created will help inspire you to quit questioning yourself and finally get writing.

Focus In on One Topic

An essay is not a book, not a 1,500-page epic saga. At its base definition, an essay is a short piece of writing on a particular subject.

Short, of course, is a very subjective word. If you're writing an essay for a specific publication, check out their word count before you sit down and get wordy. Don't focus on the "short" part just yet. Just focus on focusing.

That part about "particular topic" is the most important when it comes to the personal essay. When I'm working on an important piece, I like to brainstorm with a bubble diagram about the pieces, people, and events closest to the story itself.

As the bubbles get further away from the central topic, I get to decide whether they meet the purpose of this piece of writing. If not, they drop out, making the piece more coherent and concise. Lots of different ways of brainstorming exist, and finding one that works for you will help you in your writing endeavors.

You don't have to include the whole story. either. You can start at the catalyst moment. You can start with back story if you so choose. It's up to you as the writer to divulge as much or as little information needed to cause a series of emotions and reactions in the reader.

Here's a Pro Tip: If you get a complaint on a personal essay saying you didn't provide enough detail and the reader wants more, you've done your job. You just created someone who wants to read more of your writing. So write another essay.

But What's Worth Writing?

So, you've brainstormed and now you're second-guessing yourself. Is my topic interesting? Will anyone care to read this? Hasn't everyone already written this before? What makes my story so special?

Stop. Stop right now. Stop.

Your story is important for a thousand different reasons. Even if thirty people wrote an essay on the same topic—their first day of high school—we'd end up with thirty very different essays. Even if it was the same school on the same date in the same classroom, the personal experiences of each individual and how they write it would result in different essays.

So write. Write about motherhood. About cooking. About your grandmother, your dog, your divorce, your garden, your car, your first kiss, your last kiss, the kisses in between.

Write about what moves you.

Write about how you became politically involved.

Write what you know.

It's all worth writing, because our stories matter. They connect us in ways we didn't know we needed connected. Write it. Put away the self-doubt and just write it.

No, Really, Just Write It

Now that you've gotten over your self-doubt, you're sitting in front of a blank screen or a blank page, maybe with your brainstorming page nearby. and you're like, "Now what?" Just write.

Okay, fine. Some people develop outlines and follow very specific task lists when writing personal essays—or anything for that matter. If that's your style, go for it. Follow your routine.

But if you're just sitting there, staring at the screen, take a deep breath and write. Move those fingers across the keyboard. Scratch that pen across the page. Just write and let it flow for right now.

Don't go back and recreate sentences. Don't worry about passive voice just yet. Just write about the particular topic you're wanting to tackle with this particular essay. Write it and write it and write it. And maybe walk away for a minute, because sometimes we need a break from our own words. And then sit back down and write some more.

Write it all out. All the way out. You'll know when you're done. You'll feel it.

Now Kill Your Darlings

What now? The phrase "kill your darlings" is an albeit overused cliche when we're talking about writing, but it serves a sound purpose. It's the editing and revising portion of writing anything, including your personal essay.

When you "kill your darlings," you go back over what you've written and remove ("kill") anything that doesn't serve the core purpose of the piece. Yes, that side story about Aunt Mae's cat is really adorable, but it doesn't really add anything to the reader's understanding about why you became a gynecologist. (Punny, no?)

Removing our own words feels hard and icky sometimes. We wrote them in our fit of writing from step three, so we must want them to be in this piece, right?

If you wrote them but they don't flow or don't add to the meaning of this particular piece, maybe they're meant for yet another personal essay. If you feel that strongly about removing them, instead of deleting them, cut those suckers and paste them into another document. Revisit them after you've finished this masterpiece.

Revising will also help you whittle down to any word count you're trying to hit for a particular publication or your own love of even, odd, or prime numbers. This is also the time to get rid of passive voice, overly extraneous flowery lots-of-words descriptions (see what I did there?), and unnecessary "thats." Tighten up the piece without removing your voice, your unique way of sounding like you in a written piece.

Do Something With It

Don't just leave your essay sitting on your computer or in your journal. You just worked hard to create a well-written personal essay. Do something with it.

Publish it in your own space, whether that's a blog, LinkedIn's platform, or even on Facebook. As always, you can post your essay on BlogHer as a member post for others in the community to read with the potential of being featured on the front page of the site.

Personal essays contain the word "personal," yes, but they're meant to be read by others. It's that connection again. Let others have that "me, too" moment.

If you wrote it as a submission for a publication, actually submit it. Don't sit on it too long after you've finished your revisions or that self-doubt will creep back in, stealing the joy you felt upon finishing.

If you didn't write it specifically for publication somewhere else but your essay keeps saying, "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey," you might want to look around and find a good fit to submit. Sometimes our personal essays lead us down paths we didn't know we needed to walk, leading us on a journey of yet another personal essay.

And then? Allow yourself to feel proud. You wrote. You wrote a personal essay. It's not always easy, and it's not always rewarding. But it's yours. Congratulations!
