We consider the development of pupils outside the narrow academic sphere to be vital for their self-confidence and sociability; thus co-curricular activities are an important feature of integrated life at the school. Designed to enable pupils to learn more of themselves by expanding on existing interests and discovering new ones, they also create the foundation for friendships, pastimes and pursuits which generally last long into the future.
Why co-curricular, and not extra-curricular? Because the activities run alongside the academic curriculum, and are equally important for many children and young people here.
Longridge offers a wide range of co-curricular activities; some take place as part of activity periods which are timetabled during the school day. Others take place at lunchtime or after school. The programme tends to vary from year to year depending on interest and demand.

Our principal recently asked for the student?s opinions on the ?school cuts? proposal.
This proposition proposes that all extra curricular activities be cut until the money
situation improves as predicted in two or three years. What do you think of first when
someone mentions the word school? Most kids, if asked, would probably say their
basketball team, cheerleading squad, or the various clubs they may be involved in. For
some kids these extra curricular activities may be the only thing productive that they do
outside of school. I disagree with this outlandish proposal because extra curricular
activities teach us discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship, this may be the only means
of exercise some kids get and once these activities are removed from the agenda, they
may never be phased back in.
First of all, we all realize the importance the of learning discipline and other
attributes such as teamwork and sportsmanship. We learn these qualities, not out of a
book, but from participating and interacting with others during activities. Students learn
how to cooperate with others by doing a team project or playing a sport. We also learn
qualities such as competitiveness. This characteristic makes kids eager to do their best,
not only on the court or on the field, but in the classroom and in everything they do as
Obviously this proposal is unhealthy. This may sound strange but consider the
question. How healthy can children be if these activities are the only means of exercise
that they?re getting? According to government statistics, not as healthy as they should be.
Now we must step back and ask ourselves one question. Isn?t it better to get any means
of exercise than none at all? Surely our school board officials can answer this question
with the answer that is only unbelievably apparent to all who hear it.
Finally, I disagree with this proposal because there?s always a possibility that the
activities they are taking away, will never return like they say they will. Our school
board officials always say that our school will have extra money in a few months. How
can they set a time limit on something as unsure as money? It?s simple, they can?t. They
are only trying to insure us so that we won?t put up much of a fight against the proposal.
You have to look back and think about how many times this promise of returning
activities has not been kept and then proceed with your decision about this proposal.
In conclusion, I feel that our extra curricular activities should not be taken away
because they play a very important role-a role that I think we overlook until we fully
examine the situation. For the reasons listed in this paper, and many others, I disagree
with the passing of this proposal.

The top B-schools are believed to produce top level managers of tomorrow. And for this they select students who have undertaken extra curricular activities during there graduation. You see, the motive behind this is quite obvious and logical. A manager has to have a lot of qualities to be a good manager. These qualities include, leadership, decision making, public speaking, analytical skills, team work, and many more. These qualities can definitely not be developed if you focus only on your academics. Extra curricular activities help in developing these qualities. Since the top B-schools have a reputation of producing world class managers, extra curricular activities play a major role in the selection process. Ofcourse you need to have a good CAT/GMAT/CET score along with good academic record. But if you completely ignore extra curricular activities, it would be a tough job to make it to the top B-schools.
P.S.- I've heard that some top B-schools do not give much importance to extra curricular record. Like FMS Delhi.

It happens more than sometimes that a student who has consistently shown in studies does less well later on in life than a student who has always been academically mediocre. The reason is not, necessarily, that the former has not lived up to expectations, or that the latter has all the connections that count. Often it is just a case of the mediocre rising to excellence because he has had the good luck of finding himself.
Albert Einstein, Leo Tolstoy and Rabindranath Tagore were not considered particularly bright prospects in school, but nevertheless took the world by storm.
Obviously, academics is only one yardstick of a student’s ability. At the school level, it is presently the most important yardstick and will probably continue to be so in the foreseeable future. It is generally agreed that an educated person is required to have grounding in certain specified areas of knowledge that may be termed as ‘basic subjects’.

Over and above that, though, a good school will offer a wide variety of supplementary or co-curricular activities involving games, music, art, literature, photography, the computer, and what have you. The more varied and better organised these activities are, the greater are the chances of a student succeeding in discovering himself. What does that mean?
It means finding out what one likes doing, what one is good at and what one would like to develop one’s skills in.
It is not impossible for this to turn out to be a fairly long drawn-out trial-and-error process. A student may begin by trying his hand at painting and find himself lacking; he may then move on to debating and discover he is worse at it; he may then have a shot at acting, but in vain; finally, he may find his metier in creative writing.
He starts writing stories and poems and getting appreciation for and feedback on them. It makes him a happier, more motivated, and more energetic person. He may have been an indifferent student, but now, because his self-esteem has risen and he is more confident of himself, he attains a higher rank in class as well.
It is not necessary that he should go on to become a famous writer. The very fact that he has confidence in himself now will make a world of difference to how he goes about life and what he does with it. It is up to him to seek out suitable avenues for the expression of his creativity, but once that is done, that initial act of self-discovery in school will prove to be one of the most positive turning-points in his life.
What today is called ‘co-curricular’ was yesterday known as ‘extra-curricular’. The change in wording is significant and reveals recognition of the worth of non-academic pursuits in education. That one does not need to sit in ‘examinations’ in most co-curricular activities is a factor that makes them more enjoyable than classroom study; however, that may also be the very reason why a section of students don’t take them seriously enough.
More and more colleges and organisations have begun to look beyond the school-leaving and graduation and post-graduation certificates while deciding whom to take in and whom to leave out during admission or employment, and a good co-curricular track record may well give one an edge over a rival candidate who has no such background. This development, also, should further the worthy cause of co-curricular activities.
